Digital trade that delivers: scaling the UK–Japan corridor

New report: unlocking practical digital trade across the UK–Japan corridor

Teesside University, the International Centre for Digital Trade and Innovation, and government stakeholders, in partnership with ICC United Kingdom, have published a new report highlighting how digitalisation can deliver faster, more efficient and more accessible trade between the UK and Japan.

The report presents evidence from a series of real-world trade digitalisation pilots conducted through the Digital Trade Testbed. These pilots demonstrate that the technical foundations for digital trade are now largely in place, with secure cross-platform data sharing and electronic trade documents proven to work in practice.

Crucially, the findings show that the main barriers to scale are no longer technological. Instead, adoption depends on improving awareness, building capability across supply chains, and providing practical support to the businesses and intermediaries that manage trade day to day.

Three pilot case studies underpin the report’s conclusions. These include cross-platform data exchange between different digital trade systems, a simplified SME export journey to support market entry into Japan, and a fully digitalised trade finance transaction between UK and Japanese banks. Together, they demonstrate measurable gains in efficiency, reduced duplication, and faster transaction times, while maintaining trust and security.

The report sets out a clear pathway for scaling these benefits. It calls for targeted training and onboarding, the development of common digital “corridor” profiles, and stronger coordination between governments, industry and financial institutions. These steps will be essential to move from successful pilots to routine, repeatable digital trade.

As global trade becomes increasingly data-driven, the UK–Japan corridor offers a practical model for how advanced economies can lead the transition. This work reinforces ICC’s commitment to enabling interoperable, inclusive and scalable digital trade systems that support businesses of all sizes.
